What's New

April 2008

April 8 - Two new pieces have been added to the Resources section of the website, the short essay, 'The Smiling Sunflower', and the folk story, 'The Selection of the Zodiac' with accompanying vocabularies. They are accessible here.

January 2008

January 1 - Lingua Mongolia would like to say Happy New Near to students, translators and researchers of the Mongolian Language everywhere and to announce that the first ever commercial dictionary software for Classical/Uighur-script Mongolian is now available here. We would also like to announce that we will shortly be releasing the first ever computer-aided learning software for this much-neglected form of Mongolian that is still thriving south of the Gobi.

November 2007

November 7 - The menu system has been somewhat reorganised - please contact Lingua Mongolia if you encounter any problems using the new system.

June 2007

June 19 - The long-awaited Mongolian version of the interactive translation exercise has finally been uploaded and can be viewed here. Again, please feel free to send your translations of this exercise to Lingua Mongolia for assessment and marking.

February 2007

February 5 - I have added an interactive translation exercise that utilises a relatively new technique for aiding online language study. Due to the fact that this is a new technique, I have opted to use a piece of Cyrillic rather Uighur-script text, which is far easier to format for the web. Based on the results of this experiment, I now believe that the technique can be adapted for use with classical texts and hope to develop a few prototype texts over the coming months. For now, please try the new exercise by clicking here and feel free to send your translations to Lingua Mongolia for assessment and marking.

February 1 - As of this week, Ilya Gruntov's Monumenta Altaica site has been transferred to a new server which has increased download speeds to many orders of magnitude greater than was previously possible. Monumenta Altaica contains numerous resources in pdf form relating to Altaic linguistics that can be downloaded free of charge. Please visit this important site as soon as you can!

January 2007

January 25 - Added a link to Shop Mongolia, a relatively new online store where you can purchase books and goods directly from Mongolia. Of particular note is the fact that they have Rita Kullmann's Mongolian Grammar, which for many years was an extremely difficult book to locate.

January 20 - There are now two more links related to the Manchu language listed in the links section; an excellent pdf copy of The Gospel of Mark in Manchu and a link to an extremely useful Manchu-Chinese-English lexicon.

October 2006

June 11 - This is the first update to Lingua Mongolia in quite a long time. It's been a very busy summer as I've been preparing a manuscript for publication and designing a new bilingual travel website (which you can see by clicking here). I've also added a link to a new Mongolian travel company and you can view that either on the links page or by clicking here.

June 2006

June 11 - It is now possible to contact Lingua Mongolia directly from the contact section of the website, you can access it here.

May 2006

May 17 - Another Natsagdorj poem, 'Spring', has been added to the translations section. Again this is just the text and accompanying vocabulary. I have also added a new link to a site which offers Khalkha Mongolian listening and comprehension drills. My thanks to Baatar Khasanov for bringing this incredibly useful resource to my attention.

May 14 - Another Natsagdorj poem, 'October', has been added to the translations section. Again this is just the text and accompanying vocabulary.

May 13 - There is now another Natsagdorj poem in the translations sections. Again this is just the text and accompanying vocabulary.

May 11 - An updated version of 'My Native Land' has been uploaded and I have included scans in the pdf of Natsagdorj's original handwritten notes for this poem. Having compared the previous Mongolian text with that in Natsagdorj's own hand, a number of small corrections have also been made. You can access it here.

May 10 - I have uploaded a new document to the translations page; 'My Native Land' by Natsagdorj, probably the most famous piece of modern Mongolian poetry. So far it's just the Cyrillic and Uighur-script text, minus translation - but this will follow shortly. You can access it here.

May 5 - Some minor changes to the section on vowel harmony. I have also added a section on noun cases which you can access here, an updated donations page accessible here and other miscellaneous additions.

May 3 - Added a new webpage on vowel harmony.

April 2006

After a long wait, Lingua Mongolia has finally had its promised makeover. The previous version of this website was my first major foray into the world of website design and as a result suffered from some rather sloppy organisation which made it extremely difficult to maintain and update. The new design has been streamlined and totally re-organised so as to allow me to update it daily with the minimum of fuss. It still isn't anywhere near as complete as I would like it to be, but this is inevitable, as there is only so much time that I can devote to it amongst my other translation activities. Most of the resources now available on the new Lingua Mongolia are available for download as pdf files, which I hope will make it even easier for people to get the most out of what this website has to offer. The site will be growing steadily over the course of the summer, and I hope that users will find it of use. As usual, I am always available via e-mail; please do not hesitate to contact me.
