Syllables beginning with the velar fricatives ‘q’ and ‘gh’
Much care was taken to transcribe the Mongolian velar fricatives ‘q’ and ‘gh’. A special determinative zhong, was used to indicate that the character qualified was to be one of these fricatives. However, for some reason, the same determinative was used for both ‘q’ and ‘gh’ leaving it up to the reader to supply the correct pronunciaton.
