Bibliography

This short bibliography mainly covers books dealing with Mongolian literature and language prior to the adoption of the Cyrillic alphabet in the 1940s. However, it is worth pointing out that this changeover to Cyrillic only affected the Mongols living in what was then the Mongolian People's Republic (or Outer Mongolia). The Mongols of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region of China continue to use the Uighur-Mongolian script (Mon. uiγurčin mongγol üsüg). Furthermore, since the establishment of the Inner Mongolia University in Höhhot in 1957 a vast number of 'old-script' books have been published, some of which have been listed below.

• Boberg, Folke, Mongolian-English dictionary

  A comprehensive dictionary of Uighur-script Mongolian in three volumes containing a good mix of old and modern words. It is not as well organised as Lessing’s dictionary, and employs a much less satisfactory transliteration scheme, but is nevertheless very good. This is by far the most difficult Mongolian dictionary to find, I have so far not been able to locate a copy from any book dealers, online or otherwise. It seldom features in any bibliographies of the Mongolian language, and I only came to know of its existence during my time working for the National Library of Wales, where a copy of the three-volume set is kept. The only other copy I know of is in the Library of Congress.

• Lohia, Sushama, The Mongolian Tales of the 32 Wooden Men (γučin qoyar modun kümün-ü üliger)

  A translation of one of the main cycles of the Mongolian versions of the Vikramaditya legend. The discussion of the origins and various versions of the Vikramaditya tale in Mongolia are very useful, but on the whole the translation is somewhat stilted and contains numerous spelling mistakes and typos. The overall value of the book is reduced by the fact that the original text/transliteration is not included.
